As New Englanders, we all must make peace with inclement winter weather and the need to clear snow from sidewalks, bike lanes, and roads. In Melrose, snow operations are handled by the Department of Public Works. They have numerous pieces of equipment for plowing, sanding, and salting roadways, and like many other municipalities, also contract a portion of this work out. The Melrose DPW also clears sidewalks in certain parts of the city which sit along school walking routes. Otherwise, the general rule in Melrose is that property owners are required to clear the sidewalks abutting their property. The below graphic contains information on the city’s snow removal ordinance.
