Last fall, the City of Melrose was approved for a $400K Complete Streets grant to build out a network of sidewalks around the Hoover School. We were thrilled with the city’s persistent efforts to bring safer walking conditions to the Hoover, which has struggled to increase the share of students who walk or bike to school due in large part to the lack of neighborhood sidewalks on nearby streets. Hoover School won a bronze award from MassDOT’s Safe Routes to School program in 2020 for persistent, dedicated neighborhood efforts to improve walking rates to a school where 75% of students live within a mile of the front door, yet only around 40% walk or bike.
Our Vice Chair Ryan Williams, a Hoover dad, shared these recent photos of sidewalk construction on Whitman Ave, a primary walking and biking route to the school. We can’t wait to see these completed!
