Advocacy Work

The Melrose Pedestrian & Bicyclist Advisory Committee is a volunteer group with a mission to improve street safety and access in Melrose. Committee members and officers volunteer their time and energy to serve as technical support for city staff in support of safe streets goals. Through our advocacy work, we encourage the city to enact new policies and programs designed to ensure a purposeful, people-first approach to our streets and sidewalks.

Lower Main Street Redesign

In May 2020, the Committee presented city staff with a set of detailed recommendations for a “Complete Streets” overhaul to Lower Main Street, between West Wyoming and the Malden border. This work, which was undertaken in response to municipal plans to resurface the street in 2020/2021, serves as a continuation of the city’s existing North-South bike route and is designed to create a first-class connection between Malden/Oak Grove, Pine Banks Park, and our “downtown” Main Street business corridor. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to signal to the world that Melrose is committed to maintaining its status as a safe and walkable city. Review our plans here, and if you support a safer Main Street, sign the petition so we can ensure the city hears your voice!
