The Melrose Ped/Bike Committee congratulates the residents of Faxon Street for successfully coordinating and deploying the City’s latest “Shared Streets and Spaces” slow street installation. Residents were determined to have the setup in place before Halloween night, and did what was necessary to ensure that happened. Like other recent examples around Melrose, this project features:
- Barriers at the intersection. These barriers reduce the turning radii of the intersections of Grove and Malvern. A larger turning radius allows vehicles to maintain higher speeds when taking a corner; shorter radii require vehicles to take corners more slowly.
- Mid-block curb extensions, or bumpouts. These elements act create visual signals for drivers, indicating that they should drive more slowly, while at the same time shortening the distance required to cross the street, which makes for safer mid-block crossings between residences.
